Zack and Miri Make a Porno is an 2008 comedy film written and directed by Kevin Smith. It is Smith’s second film (after Jersey Girl) not to be set within the View Askewniverse and the first not set or shot in New Jersey. It is scheduled to be released on October 31, 2008.
Smith has released little information about the film, except that it is a comedy about two lifelong platonic friends who have managed to trudge into adulthood with a satisfying lack of accomplishment. However, a high school reunion and dire rent problems spark the novel moneymaking idea of pulling together an amateur porn enterprise with their friends. As the film begins shooting, however, Zack and Miri realize their feelings for each other might be more than just those of friends. Lifelong platonic friends Zack (Rogen) and Miri (Banks) look to solve their respective cashflow problems by making an adult film together. As the cameras roll, however, the duo begin to sense that they may have more feelings for each other than they previously thought.
There are numerous cultural references to Pittsburgh and the film’s setting in the neighborhood of Monroeville throughout the film, including a drunken Steelers fan, a Penguins Stanley Cup flag, and an old car fishtailing in the snow. One scene in the movie was shot at the Monroeville Mall with a cameo appearance by Tom Savini. The mall was the setting of Dawn of the Dead; Savini directed the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead and has worked on many other zombie and horror films. About the scene Smith said, “We got to shoot at the Monroeville Mall, and for a movie buff, that’s a very cool thing. We had Tom Savini in cameo, we shot at the Monroeville Mall, it’s as close to a zombie movie as I’ll ever get.” In the movie the character of Zack plays hockey, and his team’s name is the Monroeville Zombies, which is another reference to the George Romero classic.
This is the first Kevin Smith film produced without any rehearsal time prior to shooting. In all of Smith’s previous films, actors were made to participate in rehearsals lasting between one to three weeks in an effort to fine-tune performances before production even began. Smith attributes this lack of rehearsals to his confidence in the quality of his actors.
The Motion Picture Association of America initially gave the film an NC-17 rating for “some graphic sexuality”. Smith appealed the rating, hoping for an “R” rating, and the film was viewed by the MPAA again. In an interview with MTV.com, Seth Rogen commented “It’s a really filthy movie. I hear they are having some problems getting an R rating from an NC-17 rating, which is never good”. He continued, complaining that “They fight against sex stuff. Isn’t that weird? It’s really crazy to me that Hostel is fine, with people gouging their eyes out and shit like that… But you can’t show two people having sex — that’s too much”. On August 5, the rating was successfully appealed to an R with no cuts. It attained the rating for “strong crude sexual content including dialogue, graphic nudity and pervasive language”.
