The Stone Angel is a 2007 Canadian film, made by Kari Skogland. The film is based on Margaret Laurence’s 1964 novel The Stone Angel. It stars Ellen Burstyn in the lead role of Hagar. The film had its world premiere at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival.

The nonagenarian Hagar Shipley escapes when her son Marvin and her daughter-in-law Doris tell her she must move into nursing care. She sets out on a journey to reconcile herself with her past. She begins to remember key moments in her life, including ones with her husband Bram, and we experience with her her defining moments and hidden passions.

While hiding in a ruined home, she meets Leo, who causes her to come face-to-face with the one secret she feels that she must take to the grave, her role in her youngest son’s death. As Hagar can no longer repress her emotions, she starts to recognize her feelings that she thought she would never have, and eventually finds closure with her son.

The movie was filmed across Manitoba including Winnipeg, Hartney, Balmoral, Otterbourne, Landmark, and around Lake Winnipeg. The movie did not film in Neepawa, which inspired the novel’s setting, because it was too far from Winnipeg and did not have enough period-looking buildings.
