Star Wars: The Clone Wars is a 2008 CGI animated science fiction film. It is slated for release on August 14, 2008 in Australia and August 15, 2008 in the United States and United Kingdom. It will be the first Star Wars film to be released to theaters since 2005's Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and will be the first animated Star Wars feature film in theaters. It will also be the first film in the series not to be released by 20th Century Fox (Warner Bros. will handle distribution on behalf of co-production partner Cartoon Network). The film is intended to precede the animated TV series of the same name to air on Cartoon Network.
The Clone Wars takes place between Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. The eponymous Clone Wars rage between the Confederacy of Independent Systems and the Galactic Republic. When Jabba the Hutt's son is taken by a group of renegades, Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi depart in search of answers: where is the Hutt's son, and who is controlling this mysterious renegade group? Yoda sends Ahsoka Tano along as Anakin's apprentice. Count Dooku, Asajj Ventress and General Grievous will also appear.
The film will lead in to the weekly animated TV series of the same name. The film was "almost an afterthought" as Lucas watched some of the TV episodes on a large screen and decided: "This is so beautiful, why don't we just go and use the crew and make a feature?" The film will be animated using computer generated imagery to resemble anime. Actors from the live-action films, including Anthony Daniels and Samuel L. Jackson, will return to voice their respective characters.. Nick Jameson, who had voiced Palpatine/Darth Sidious in the previous Clone Wars series, as well as various video games, will not reprise his role, neither will Mat Lucas (Anakin Skywalker).
DK Publishing and Penguin Group have announced plans to release books, activities and other merchandise that will tie in with the film, such as Clone Wars: The Visual Guide, to be published by DK, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, to be published by Puffin in the UK and Grosset & Dunlap in the U.S. The U.S. on-sale date is July 26, 2008 and the UK on-sale date is August 7, 2008.
According to LucasArts' website, a videogame adaptation of the movie is in the works for the Nintendo DS, Star Wars The Clone Wars: Jedi Alliance and Wii, Star Wars The Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels. Home Video and Television. Warner Bros. also has the home video rights, and has already planned a DVD release of the film and TV series. According to SpikeTV producer Terry Minogue, the channel will ultimately debut the film on television at some point after its theatrical release. There have been plans to show the film on TV before 2009.
