Saw V is the fifth installment in the Saw film series. The film is set to be released on October 24, 2008. Unlike the previous three installments, Saw V will not be directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, but instead by David Hackl, who was the production designer of Saw II, Saw III and Saw IV, as well as a second-unit director for Saw III and Saw IV.
Lionsgate recently released a brief plot synopsis for Saw V that “Hoffman is seemingly the last person alive to carry on the Jigsaw legacy. But when his secret is threatened, Hoffman must go on the hunt to eliminate all loose ends.” Almost every one brought in to try and solve the jigsaw mystery has died or been injured. With John’s dead body in the hospital, Officer Rigg badly injured still in the warehouse, Agent Perez recovering in the hospital and Agent Strahm nowhere to be found there leaves one. Upon hearing the news that Jigsaw’s games will continue from his death Detective Hoffman has disappeared and a whole new game is just about to start.
A clip of the opening sequence was shown at Comic-Con 2008 and added to the film’s official website on September 17, 2008. A man named Seth awakens to find himself chained to a table, looking up at a razor-edged pendulum on the ceiling. A videotaped message from Billy reveals that Seth had been sentenced to life in prison for murder, but was released on a technicality after five years. The pendulum descends toward him as it begins to swing; after 30 seconds it will be close enough to touch his skin, and after 60 seconds it will cut him in half. Seth is told that in order to save himself, he must “destroy the things that have killed — your hands” by inserting them into two presses and pushing the starter buttons inside. He does so, the presses crushing his hands, but the pendulum continues its descent. The clip ends at the 50-second mark when the title card comes up; Seth’s fate is left unrevealed.
Saw V was written by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, and the film went into production after Christmas 2007. Filming began on March 17, 2008 in Toronto and principal photography concluded on April 28, 2008. Saw V finished filming by May 2, 2008 and had started post-production. So far, there have been three photos released of David Hackl at the set of Saw V. The first trailer, depicting Agent Strahm’s box trap, was released at Comic-Con 08 as of a short clip and the trailer was also shown before The X-Files: I Want to Believe. The website opened on August 6, 2008 but only led to the teaser trailer after filling out the basic information chart. On September 17th, a new clip was available on the Saw V website, depicting the Pendulum Trap. Starting on September 29th, Myspace began posting advertisements on their website about the movie. Also on September 29th, the website opened officially with other things besides just the trailer.
Costas Mandylor has signed up for the next installment of the horror franchise along with main character, Jigsaw, portrayed by Tobin Bell. It was confirmed through multiple sources that David Hackl, the production designer for Saw II, Saw III and Saw IV and second unit director for Saw III and Saw IV has officially been announced to direct both Saw V and Saw VI.[24] However, it was later reported that Hackl would only direct Saw V, and that Saw VI would be directed by Kevin Greutert, the editor on all the Saw films to date.
The writers of Saw IV, Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, will be writing Saw V and Saw VI. Saw V has been in production since Christmas and is set to be released on October 24, 2008. In an interview at IGN.com, Patrick Melton hinted that Saw V will reveal what happened to Corbett after Saw III. Producer Mark Burg has stated he wants Scott Patterson to return as Agent Strahm, which will be difficult as he’s doing a TV series. Patterson’s TV show, Aliens in America, was cancelled in May 2008.
