RocknRolla is a film directed by Guy Ritchie. The film stars Gerard Butler, Thandie Newton, and Tom Wilkinson. It was filmed in London and released on September 5, 2008. When a Russian mobster sets up a real estate scam that generates millions of pounds, various members of London’s criminal underworld pursue their share of the fortune. Various shady characters, including Mr One-Two, Stella the accountant, and Johnny Quid, a druggie rock-star, try to claim their slice.

You can say this much for Guy Ritchie’s RocknRolla: it isn’t as bad as his last two films,” writes Tim Robey in The Telegraph, while The Times’ James Christopher says the movie “brings back too many jaundiced memories and fails to lay any fresh tracks”. Is this just a case of po-faced Brits laying into one of their own, however? US trade bible Variety describes Rocknrolla as Ritchie’s return “to top form”. The film is “cleverly constructed, sensationally stylish and often darkly hilarious” writes Joe Laydon.

What do you reckon? Does it matter that Rocknrolla is almost identical in style to Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels? Is this one the movie equivalent of a Rolling Stones classic, or a filler track from a late-era Oasis album? Guy Ritchie’s latest mockney gangster flick a return to form, or a repeat offence? A bit of both, to be honest, guv. The director has skulked back to the stylised criminal milieu of his splashily successful 1998 debut, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. He has also recaptured some of the cinematic brio and tonguein-cheek swagger that made us love him back then, before the genre he created was milked to death. And before he turned out to be a toff, married Madonna and gave us the unwatchable Swept Away and Revolver. So RocknRolla is another tale of lovable wideboys with daft nicknames, spouting patter and attitude until they’re given a short, sharp slap by bigger, nastier crims.

A scheduling conflict prevented director Guy Ritchie from casting actor Jason Statham, who appeared in three of his films, into RocknRolla

In May 2007, director Guy Ritchie announced the production of RocknRolla, a film with a similar theme to his previous films, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) and Snatch (2000). RocknRolla, written by Ritchie, will be produced by Joel Silver’s Dark Castle Entertainment and distributed by Warner Bros.. The following June, Ritchie hired the cast for RocknRolla, and filming began on location in London on June 19, 2007.

Guy Ritchie is planning to extend RocknRolla into a trilogy if enough people like the first one, following characters still alive at the end of the first film.
