Planet 51 is an animated film directed by Jorge Blanco and written by Joe Stillman. Produced by Madrid-based Ilion Animation Studios and HandMade Films for $60 million, it was acquired for US distribution by New Line Cinema in November 2007. As of 9 July 2008, Planet 51 is slated to be released in the second half of 2009 by Sony Pictures Worldwide via TriStar Pictures. Its trailer was shown before Race To Witch Mountain. The title is a pun/reference to Area 51.
The film follows a human astronaut who lands on Planet 51 thinking he’s the first to set foot on it. However, he discovers it’s inhabited by little green people who live in a white picket-fenced world reminiscent of 1950s America. The inhabitants of Planet 51 live in fear of alien invasion. Their paranoia is realized when an astronaut arrives from Earth. Befriended by a young resident, he has to avoid capture in order to recover his spaceship and try to return home.
The film, costing $60 million, will finish production by June 2009. Planet 51 is slated for release on November 20, 2009 by Sony Pictures Worldwide via their TriStar Pictures division. In November 2007, New Line Cinema had picked up the film’s domestic distribution rights; when the studio was folded into Warner Bros. in February 2008, Warner Bros. itself was to release the film in the summer of 2009. However, the film’s producers insisted on a November release.
