Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is an 2009 American romantic comedy film that offers a new take on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Mark Waters directed a script by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore. Filming spanned February 19, 2008 to July 2008 in Boston, Massachusetts with stars Matthew McConaughey, Emma Stone and Jennifer Garner. The film will be released on May 1, 2009.
Matthew McConaughey stars as a freewheeling libertine who’s haunted by the spirits of girlfriends of the present, past, and beyond at his brother’s wedding, awakening long-lost feelings for his first love. Jennifer Garner, Michael Douglas, Anne Archer, and Robert Forster co-star in this feature helmed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls) and scripted by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore. Breckin Meyer and Lacey Chabert round out the cast of the New Line production.
A womanizer (Matthew McConaughey) is haunted by the ghosts of his former girlfriends at his younger brother’s (Breckin Meyer) wedding. The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (Emma Stone), Present (Noureen DeWulf), and Future (Amanda Walsh) take him on a journey through his romantic history (à la Ebenezer Scrooge) to help him come to a realization about his ways with women and as well as what he lost with the one woman he was previously intimate and passionately with since childhood.
It was originally set up at Walt Disney Pictures with Ben Affleck attached to play the lead character. Production was to begin in the fall of 2003, but budget concerns and the failure of Gigli resulted in the cancellation of the film one month prior to shooting. In December 2008, the film was granted a PG-13 rating for sexual content throughout, some language, and a drug reference.
