Warner Bros. presents the new film by The Dark Knight’s Christopher Nolan, this one taking on a sci-fi psychological spin for the serious-minded action auteur, with Leonardo DiCaprio spearheading the cast. A team of highly-trained mercenaries known as “The Expendables” led by Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) consisting of Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Kong Bao (Jet Li), Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), Hale Ceasar (Terry Crews), Toll Road (Randy Couture) and assisted by an arms dealer known as Tool (Mickey Rourke) and a South American contact, Emanuel (Danny Trejo) are hired by the mysterious Mr. Church to overthrow General Garza (David Zayas), the vicious, violent and ruthless dictator of the island of Corza near Brazil who has caused devastation for over 20 years. The challenge won’t be as easy as they thought. In their way is a crooked CIA agent, Monroe (Eric Roberts), his psychotic bodyguard, Dan Paine (Steve Austin), and a former expendable, The Brit (Gary Daniels) who is looking for revenge against the team.

Production began on March 3, 2009 and filming began on March 28 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and other locations included Mangaratiba, Niteroi, Guanabara Bay, and Parque Lage. Filming ended April 25. Filming continued later on May 11 in Elmwood and Downtown, New Orleans, Louisana which included French Quarter, St. Peters Street, Fort Mccomb, Claiborne Avenue and the Interstate 10 Overpass and will conclude in Downtown, Los Angeles, California at the end of June.

Jean-Claude Van Damme was personally offered a role by Stallone, but turned it down. This reportedly led to Dolph Lundgren being cast instead. The role accepted by Forest Whitaker was originally conceived as a role for Wesley Snipes but later rewritten for Whitaker. Due to a scheduling conflict prior to filming, Forest Whitaker was replaced by Curtis Jackson (aka 50 Cent) for the role of Hale Caesar, who was then in turn replaced by former NFL player Terry Crews due to negative fan reaction on Aint it cool News.

Stallone wanted Sandra Bullock to play the role of Agent Diane Lickson yet Bullock’s schedule did not work with the film, and she could not participate. Ben Kingsley was offered the role of Monroe before Eric Roberts was cast. The role may be combined with that of Agent Will Sands.

The role of the man who hires the Expendables, Mr. Church, has been very difficult to cast. Initially offered to Schwarzenegger, he declined in favor of a smaller cameo in respects to his political career. The role was then offered to Kurt Russell whose agent replied that he was not interested in “Ensemble acting at the moment.” Currently, Stallone is looking to find a big action name to cameo as Mr. Church with rumors suggesting that the role has been offered to friend and fellow former Planet Hollywood co-owner Bruce Willis, although he is apparently tied to the filming of A Couple of Dicks. On May 29, 2009, the script under went a few re-writes which ultimately excluded Brittany Murphy’s character.

Water. Earth. Fire. Air. In the old days, there was peace between the four nations of the world. The Avatar — the spiritual and physical manifestation of the Earth itself — kept peace between the the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. Only the Avatar has the ability to manipulate all four elements, but one day, he simply disappeared.

In the interim, the Fire Nation attacked, and for the last hundred years have carried out an all out war on the rest of the world. Now, for the good of the world, it’s up to 12-year-old Aang (Noah Ringer), the new Avatar, to return peace and balance by putting his childish ways aside and mastering the four elements. Aang must accept his destiny by stopping the Fire Nation’s war and defeating the Fire Lord for good.

In a world where the four elements can be controlled by people known as “Benders”, the Fire Nation is waging a ruthless, oppressive war to control the other great nations. The only hope for stopping the brutal war led by the Firebenders rests on the shoulders of a reluctant young boy named Aang (Noah Ringer). The last known survivor of the peaceful Air Nomads and the Airbenders, Aang is the “Avatar”. The “Avatar” is the physical re-incarnation of the world spirit, with the power to manipulate all four elements and draw upon the power, knowledge, and experiences of the Avatar’s previous incarnations.

The Avatar is responsible for maintaining balance between the four nations of the world and the spirit world, hence keeping the balance of the world. Aided by a protective teenage Waterbender named Katara (Nicola Peltz) and her bull-headed brother Sokka (Jackson Rathbone), Aang begins a perilous journey to restore balance to their war-torn world. Standing in their way are Fire Nation Admiral Zhao (Aasif Mandvi) and Prince Zuko (Dev Patel), the banished prince of the Fire Nation who seeks to capture the young Avatar to regain his honor.

Shyamalan originally offered the roles of Aang to Tae Kwon Do-trained Texan Noah Ringer; Sokka to Jackson Rathbone (Twilight); Katara to Nicola Peltz (Deck the Halls); and Zuko to Jesse McCartney. The casting of white actors in Asian roles triggered negative fan reaction marked by accusations of racism, a letter-writing campaign, and a protest outside of a Philadelphia casting call for movie extras.

Rathbone dismissed the complaints, saying “I think it’s one of those things where I pull my hair up, shave the sides, and I definitely need a tan. It’s one of those things where, hopefully, the audience will suspend disbelief a little bit.” In February 2009, Dev Patel replaced McCartney, whose tour dates conflicted with a boot camp scheduled for the cast to train in martial arts.

Aasif Mandvi will play Admiral Zhao, Shaun Toub will play Uncle Iroh, Cliff Curtis will play Fire Lord Ozai and Keong Sim has been cast in the role of an Earthbender. Katharine Houghton and Seychelle Gabriel are expected to play “Gran Gran”, the grandmother of Katara and Sokka, and Princess Yue, another of Sokka’s love interests and princess of the Northern Water Tribe, respectively. According to Paramount Pictures, Isaac Jin Solstein is playing an earthbending boy.

The teaser trailer for the film was attached to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, released in theaters on June 24, 2009. The teaser trailer was also shown on Entertainment Tonight, June 22, 2009 as an ET network exclusive. The ad for the movie was attached to Nick.com, the home for the the original series. The trailer shows Aang airbending in a temple which is being attacked by mulitudes of fire nation ships.

• Noah Ringer as Aang, a 12-year-old “Avatar” whose main duties are to protect the world and bend all four elements. He is fun-loving and carefree and would rather have fun than assume his responsibilities.

• Jackson Rathbone as Sokka, a 15-year-old warrior from the Southern Water Tribe and Katara’s brother.
• Dev Patel as Prince Zuko, a 16-year-old prince who travels with his uncle and tries to capture the Avatar in order to regain his honor and position as heir to the Fire Nation throne.
• Aasif Mandvi as Admiral Zhao, a hot-tempered Fire Nation Commander in pursuit of the Avatar. He is Zuko’s principal rival.
• Shaun Toub as Uncle Iroh, an older man who is extremely easy-going and friendly and often acts as a surrogate father to his nephew, Zuko.
• Cliff Curtis as Fire Lord Ozai, the leader of the war and the Fire Nation. He is the primary antagonist in the series.
• Jessica Andres as Suki, the leader of the young female warriors of Kyoshi Island, The Kyoshi Warriors. She is a friend to Aang and one of Sokka’s love interests.
