Coraline is a 2009 animated stop-motion horror fantasy film based on Neil Gaiman’s novella of the same name. Directed by Henry Selick, it is scheduled to be released in theaters on February 6, 2009. It is rated PG for thematic elements, scary images, some language, and suggestive humor. The film is about a young girl, Coraline (Dakota Fanning), who unlocks a mysterious door in her new home and enters into a parallel reality, a fantastical and thrilling imitation of her own dull life.
In this world, Coraline finds a new version of her real mother (Teri Hatcher) and father (John Hodgman), her off-kilter neighbors, Miss Forcible (Dawn French), Miss Spink (Jennifer Saunders) and Mr. Bobinsky (Ian MacShane), and the Cat (Keith David). However, this other world soon begins to unravel and she becomes a prisoner to her Other Mother and must count on her resourcefulness, determination, and bravery to get back home.
A young girl (Fanning) walks through a secret door in her new home and discovers an alternate version of her life. On the surface, this parallel reality is eerily similar to her real life – only much better. But when her adventure turns dangerous, and her counterfeit parents (including Other Mother Hatcher) try to keep her forever, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness, determination, and bravery to get back home – and save her family.
Eleven year old Coraline Jones (voice of Dakota Fanning) is fearless courageous, and perhaps far too adventurous for her own good. Coraline and her parents (Terry Hatcher and John Hodgman) have recently relocated to Oregon from Michigan. Bored in her new home since her parents are distracted by work and she has yet to make any new friends, Coraline passes the time by exploring her new neighborhood with an annoying local boy named Wybie Lovat (Robert Bailey, Jr). But after paying a visit to her eccentric neighbors Miss Spink (Jennifer Saunders and Miss Forcible (Dawn French), a pair of ageing British actresses, and crossing paths with the outright weird Mr. Bobinsky (Ian McShane), the precocious young girl becomes convinced that her new surroundings are just as dull as she’d initially suspected.
Shortly thereafter, Coraline discovers a hidden door in her new house, and decides to investigate. Venturing into the eerie passageway inside, Coraline emerges into an alternate version of her own reality. At first glance this strange new world seems even better than the real thing; there her parents aren’t distracted by work, and Coraline is always the center of attention. There’s even a mysterious Cat (Keith David) that’s fascinated by her every move. But when Coraline’s button-eyed Other Mother (also Hatcher) attempts to make her stay permanent, the frightened young girl must summon her resourcefulness and bravery in order to find her way back home and save her real family.
Adapted from the Hugo Award-winning, internationally best-selling novel, Coraline is a spine-tingling tale about a curious girl who unlocks a mysterious door in her family’s new home and enters into an adventure in a parallel reality. On the surface, this “Other World” eerily mimics her own life – though it is much more fantastical. In it, Coraline encounters different versions of her own life, including off-kilter neighbors and an Other Mother who attempts to keep her forever. Ultimately, Coraline must rely on her resourcefulness, determination and bravery to get back home.
Focus Features will distribute the film. Coraline appeared at Comic-Con 2007. A trailer was shown with the films Beowulf, U2 3D, Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert, Twilight, The Nightmare Before Christmas, High School Musical 3, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, Bedtime Stories, and Bolt. The film will be released on February 6, 2009.
Characters:
- Coraline Jones – 11 year-old Coraline is a self proclaimed explorer who is young, clever, and curious. Coraline is often irritated by rain, crazy grownups (as they all seem to be), and not being taken seriously because of her young age and quiet demeanor, though perhaps her biggest pet peeve is that everyone mistakes her name for Caroline (everyone in the real world at least, except the mice and her parents).
- Coraline’s Mother/Other Mother – Coraline’s mom, Mel Jones, works at her house on the computer. She is very busy most of the time, constantly working on the computer, but she loves and cares about Coraline. The Other Mother is the creator of the other world. During the film her appearance changes from an abstractly peachy version of Coraline’s real mother into a gangly, wretched form to reflect spider-like qualities (the transformation of Other Mother is similar to Nanny McPhee’s, only just the opposite, over time she gets uglier, revealing her truer self).
- Coraline’s Father/Other Father – Coraline’s dad, Charlie Jones, like her mom, works at his house on the computer which he spends most of his time on. He cares about Coraline very much, and tries to act “cool”. The Other Father is a singing man created by the Other Mother, whom he fears greatly. Other Father also seems to have a jazzy voice, most noticably during “making up a song about Coraline”.
- The Cat – A black cat from Coraline’s world (as opposed to that of the Other Mother). The cat acts as a mentor to Coraline and guides her through her journey.
- Mr. Bobinsky – The film version of Mr. Bobo from the book. He is one of Coraline’s neighbors, a blue-skinned Russian giant who once trained in the circus and lives on a steady diet of beets. His other world counterpart is the ring master of a circus of rats.
- Miss Forcible and Miss Spink – A pair of retired actresses. They own several stuffed Scottie dogs and talk in theater jargon, often referencing their time as actresses. They recognize the danger that Coraline is in when they read her fortune through tea leaves. In the other world, the stuffed Scottie dogs are alive and behave like humans. It is implied that they sisters, but this is not firmly established.
- Wybie Lovat – A character original to the movie. In the real world he is described as an annoying neighbor kid. His other world counterpart is the most helpful person to Coraline. In the film he possesses a mask with a three piece turret lens that he wears when outside. Later on, when Coraline goes into the other world, there appears to be a another person who wears the mask and rides around on a motorcycle. Henry Selick created Wybie mainly so Coraline would not be walking around and talking to herself throughout the film as in the book.
