Case 39 is an American/Canadian horror film directed by Christian Alvart and starring Academy Award winner Renée Zellweger and young Canadian actress Jodelle Ferland. The film was shot in Vancouver in late 2006, and was scheduled to be released in August 2008, but it was pushed back to April 10, 2009, but now the release date is to be decided. It is scheduled to be distributed by Paramount Pictures. The film is rated R for violence and terror including disturbing images.

Prompted to rescue ten-year-old Lillith Sullivan (Jodelle Ferland) from her parents after allegations of abuse suggest that the child is not safe in her own home, kind-hearted social worker Emily Jenkins (Renée Zellweger) discovers to her horror that the situation is far deadlier than she ever suspected. Ian McShane and Bradley Cooper also star in the thriller from Antibodies director Christian Alvart.

“Case 39″ centers on an idealistic social worker who saves an abused 10-year-old girl from her parents only to discover that the girl is not as innocent as she thinks. Social worker Emily Jenkins (Zellweger) thinks she has seen it all until she meets her newest, most mysterious case, troubled 10-year old Lilith Sullivan (Ferland). Emily’s worst fears are confirmed when the parents try to kill Lilith, their only daughter. Emily saves her and decides to take her in herself until the right foster family comes along, only to find out the girl isn’t nearly as innocent as she thought.

On October 31, 2006, a fire started on the film’s set in Vancouver. None of the cast was on the set at the time and nobody was seriously injured, though the set and studio were destroyed. The film has had many release dates, since it first began production back in 2006. Its inital US release was February 8, 2008 which was changed to February 22, 2008. It was then moved to August 22, 2008, and then moved again to April 10, 2009. It was then totally removed from Paramount’s release schedule. Its release has also been bumped many times in Australia, but is currently settling for a August 27, 2009 date
