Bandslam is a musical-romantic comedy film produced by Walden Media and Summit Entertainment, the film is centered around very different teenagers, all with a shared love of music. This film was previously titled Will and Rock On. It stars Gaelan Connell, Aly Michalka, Vanessa Hudgens and Lisa Kudrow. Walden Media has finished filming the movie, which started in Austin, Texas, with additional scenes filmed in New York City. Filming started February 2, 2008 and ended April 2, 2008.

Will Burton (Gaelan Connell) is used to being bullied or completely ignored by his schoolmates, so when cool and popular former cheerleader Charlotte Banks (Aly Michalka) starts inviting him to spend time with her, the teenager is stunned — as is his single mom Karen (Lisa Kudrow). Impressed by his eclectic knowledge of music, Charlotte, a gifted singer-songwriter, asks Will to manage her rock/ska band. Her goal is to take revenge on her egocentric musician ex-boyfriend Ben Wheatley (Scott Porter) at a regional battle of the bands.

Unsure of what he’s getting himself into, Will agrees to help Charlotte’s band, including Bug (Charlie Saxton) and Omar (Tim Jo), eventually expanding it with a crew of like-minded outcasts. Against all odds, the group’s sound starts to come together and their prospects for success look bright. Even more surprising, Will starts losing his “loser-status”, up to the point there is a potential romance brewing with Sa5m(Vanessa Hudgens), a classmate with untapped musical talents.

Perpetually a misfit, Will strikes up a friendship with like-minded outsider Sa5m[4]. They are both surprised when the school’s “it” girl, Charlotte recruits Will to help assemble a band to compete in “Bandslam,” a battle of the bands that is described by Sa5m as “Texas High School Football BIG.” Charlotte’s ex-boyfriend Ben Wheatly is poised to win with his band Glory Dogs – Springsteen wannabes down to their hats. For the first time in his life, Will finds he is uniquely suited to not only participate in something, but to truly make a difference.

Cast:

  • Gaelan Connell as Will Burton, is described as an awkward, teenage diamond in the rough. The oldest teenager in the world. He is a big fan of old rock bands, especially, David Bowie. His room is covered in posters: everything from Bloc Party to early U2 to “More Specials” to “A Hard Day’s Night” in French. He is romantically linked to Sa5m, friend to Charlotte, manager to “I Can’t Go On, I’ll Go On.” and the son of Karen.
  • Aly Michalka as Charlotte Banks, is rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist to her band. A 17-year-old student, friend to Will, Junior Prom Queen, and a former cheerleader. She has her own Wikipedia page. She’s the ex girlfriend of Ben Wheatley.
  • Vanessa Hudgens as Sa5m, is described as “dark and emo” and yet a pretty 17-year-old girl. She talks slowly because she used to stutter, and the doctor told her that slowing down would help. She will be Will’s girlfriend.
  • Lisa Kudrow as Karen Burton, is in her late 30s and a supportive mother to Will. She is described as a workaholic. She is a single mom since the day Will’s father was sent to prison.
  • Scott Porter as Ben Wheatley, Lead vocals for “Glory Dogs”, Charlotte’s ex-boyfriend.
  • Charlie Saxton as Bug, the bass player, wears skatepunk shorts and badly judged tattoos to go with his faux-hawk haircut. He moshes relentlessly, but with absolutely no coolness quotient.
  • Tim Jo as Omar, Guitarist to Charlotte’s band, is a Bengali, with long, straggly hair, and sporting a truly stab at a mustache.
  • Ryan Donowho as Basher Martin, Drummer to Charlotte’s band.
  • David Bowie as himself
