Season Eight, also known as Day 8, of the American serial television series 24 began shooting on May 27, 2009, and premiered on January 17th, 2010 following the pattern of the show since season four. The story arc will involve Jack Bauer contending with assassination threats made during a peace conference between President of the United States Allison Taylor and President Omar Hassan of the fictional Islamic Republic of Kamistan. The series will relocate to New York and see the re-activation of CTU’s New York Office, but while there originally were no plans for filming in New York due to budget constraints, some scenes were shot on-location.
The plotline will begin and end at 4:00 P.M. It has been revealed that Gregory Itzin will reprise his role as former President Charles Logan near the end of the season. Set 8 months after season 7, season 8 begins and ends at 4:00 PM, unfolding in New York City amidst the shadows of the Statue of Liberty and the United Nations where CTU has been upgraded and is run by the MBA-schooled Brian Hastings (Mykelti Williamson). Cole Ortiz (Freddie Prinze Jr.), a former Marine who wants to follow in Jack Bauer’s footsteps, runs the division’s Field Operations.
Expert data analyst Dana Walsh (Katee Sackhoff) collaborates with systems analyst & drone pilot Arlo Glass inside CTU’s New York branch. Rob Weiss serves as President Allison Taylor’s new Chief of Staff, and Meredith Reed is an ambitious journalist with ties to the unfolding situation. Jack Bauer is simply a man who wants to move on with his life and be with his daughter and granddaughter, but plans come to a halt when, once again, America needs his help.
The eighth season will be produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Imagine Television. A recent interview with Kiefer Sutherland confirmed that Season 8 will take place within very close proximity to the closing events of Season 7. According to Kiefer Sutherland, this season is likely to be the last unless the writers come up with a good idea for a ninth season and the fans are eager to see more. Mary Lynn Rajskub had also said that any chance for a ninth season depends on how many viewers tune in to the season 8 premiere. Sutherland stated “there’s only so much you can do to Jack (Bauer) before you lose realism. I think a movie would be a good way to end this story.”
Producers and writers Howard Gordon, Evan Katz, David Fury, Manny Coto, Brannon Braga, Brad Turner, Alex Gansa, Brian Grazer, Chip Johannessen and Patrick Harbinson are all signed for the eighth season. Also among the executive production staff is show star Kiefer Sutherland.
